The most vulnerable items in any relocation is usually your glassware including china. So if you want your fragile items to survive, you may need to provide them with plenty of protection. Packing your fragile items like Crockery, glassware, photo frames etc. can be demanding since those need to be secured from bumps, vibrations or shocks of any kind while transportation. You may need to consider a lot of basics on how to pack your fragile items so that they don’t shift from a place while stacked on a moving truck since different items need different handling, for example, bone china needs different packaging method when compared to the LCD Television.
Most common hazards for fragile items may be vibration and shock. This may come in various forms like, a box getting dropped due to sudden braking, or shaken by a heavy vibrating engine or carted over rough path when being moved to a truck. Don’t use newspapers because the print residue may stick on to the items that the best of washing process will not take it off. Also, the print residue can ruin porous items like clay pots or lampshades or things with rough finishes like antiques. People may also try to use towels, blankets or bed sheets for protection, which may either consume most of the space in a box or aid cracks in the glassware due to compression. Therefore, packaging material to be used for cushioning needs to be able to protect from shock and vibration while possessing physical characteristics which do not harm the items both from breakage and color imposition.
Efficient packing materials for fragile items include;
1. Inflated material like bubble wraps privide cushioning around the object
2. Heavy grades of paper or kraft paper can be wadded into the box or may
be wrapped around the objects. These types of paper provide more cushioning than the newspaper
3. Corrugated paper pads which are made from fluted board having right amount of thickness provide the required cushioning
4. Foam sheets engineered to fit around the objects for optimum cushioning
5. Packaging air tight foils which are designed to fill a void within a box,
protect the objects from the sides of the box. The can withstand multiple
shocks on a moving truck.
Right sized box for the job is 2×2 which barely carries 4 Kgs. Wrap individual items separately with sufficient padding for protection. Ideally they shouldn’t come into contact with other items inside the box. Clearly label the boxes as “Fragile” and “This way Up”. Photos in glass frames should get the same care. They are even harder to replace and are just as breakable.
Apart from cushioning, the items may need to be braced within the box to securely hold them in place during transportation. For example, the LCD Television set often comes with molded braces on the rear that secures it from shifting when properly fastened inside the box. It always makes sense to save any specifically shaped bracing material which come with the items during original purchase.
